Manganese is a naturally occurring trace mineral that’s required by the body for several important functions. Manganese acts as a cofactor for enzymes called glycosyltransferases, which help produce proteoglycans, the main structural components of cartilage. Manganese is also a critical component of a mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme called superoxide dismutase. Manganese helps protect cellular mitochondria from free radical damage that can harm healthy cells, leading to poor health and premature aging.
