Alternative Pasta Showdown!
 April 30, 2016
"So many new types of pasta – high protein, gluten-free, and regular wheat pasta made with vegetable purees. I wanted to compare a few brands of “alternative” pastas to see how they compared to conventional pasta and to each other. I cooked all of them according to instructions (in salted water) and tasted them combined with Muir Glen tomato sauce and also with a simple dressing of seasoned olive oil/balsamic vinegar. Jovial’s brown rice pasta is gluten-free and works really well as a straight pasta replacement for the wheat-averse. Tolerant and Banza make pasta from lentils and chickpeas, respectively, and both are great sources of protein and fiber – it would be better not to think of them as pasta any more but as an entire protein-rich food. Of these two, I prefer Tolerant’s lentil pasta - it’s tastier and has a better texture than Banza’s chickpea pasta. Then there’s Barilla’s “veggie” pasta that’s made from wheat but also contains 25% spinach and zucchini puree – it tastes about the same as regular pasta but contains more vitamins. The bottom line is that they are all good in different ways – my favorites are Jovial and Tolerant.
Jovial’s pasta is made from brown rice that’s organically grown in Italy and then converted into pasta by experienced pasta makers. To me, it was the winner if you are purely looking for a gluten-free pasta that has a texture and taste that’s very similar to regular pasta. Tasting it, I was amazed that it was made from rice and not wheat flour. It holds sauce very well (thanks to the traditional way that it’s made, which gives it a coarse texture) and it also has a nice firm bite. Nutritionally it’s not as rich in protein, fiber or vitamins as the other options I tired, but if you want pasta that’s mostly carbs (it does also have fiber, 8% of your RDA, and 5 grams protein too) and that tastes good, this is a good choice. It contains zero sodium, so add salt to the water when you cook it (if you’re not on a low sodium diet). 5/5 gold stars for quality and price.
In terms of sustainability, Jovial’s product is made purely from organic brown rice using traditional methods and then dried slowly. The packaging is sustainable – a cardboard box (minimum 80% recycled content) which is of course recyclable, with a little clear window made from wood pulp that’s compostable (I think it’s cellophane). I looked into rice that’s grown in Italy and right now it looks like pasta made from organic wheat may be better in terms of environmental impact depending on the specific product. But if you’re gluten-intolerant then Jovial pasta is a decent choice. 4/5 green stars for social and environmental impact."

Great texture and flavor!
 October 27, 2015
"While I am not gluten intolerant, I have been trying to avoid wheat. I have tried a number of GF pastas, and most have a rubbery texture and off flavor. Jovial's pasta is by far the best. You'll want to cook it a minute or two more than a normal pasta."

One of the best gluten-free pastas I've tried
 May 7, 2014
"This gf pasta, unlike some of the other brown rice pastas I've tried, cooks evenly and doesn't get so gummy. Probably you could fool gluten-eating people with it, if you sauced it up nicely."
